Good morning. Thank you, John, for that kind introduction. Thank all of you for coming, or watching on the Webcast. And thank you to CSIS for hosting us at your beautiful building. Before I begin, I want to pause to remember the 147 students at Garissa University College in Kenya who were senselessly murdered just a few days ago. Schools are sacred grounds, and all who study there should be safe. Let us reflect for a moment.

I am currently volunteering at Mpapa Health Centre in a rural area of Tanzania. I have now delivered over 25 beautiful babies and am always busy caring for patients who come walking from villages miles and miles away to receive treatment that most of us would have from our own medicine cabinet.

Africa is playing a key role in shaping the future. Fifty years ago, the world watched Africa with fascination as seventeen countries declared their independence in 1960.

In 2013, the World Bank Group announced two goals that would guide its development work worldwide. The first is the eradication of chronic poverty. More formally, it is the target of bringing the number of extremely poor people, defined as those living on less than 1.25 ppp-adjusted dollars a day, to less than 3pc of the world population by 2030.
