WTO meet heads to Nairobi: It could be Africa’s moment of glory…or disaster

There was a sigh of relief when the 10th WTO Ministerial conference in Nairobi reached an $1.3 trillion Information Technology Agreement. The pact was agreed by a group of member countries who produce IT products and was not opposed by other WTO member states.

A standoff looms at the WTO ministerial meeting as the council pushes for a fresh round of issues that will favour developed nations, leaving out critical issues tabled by African countries.

World Trade Organisation member countries agreed to abolish agricultural export subsidies after five days of talks in Nairobi, but failed to make progress on the long-stalled Doha Round of negotiations aimed at lowering global trade barriers.

The EU describes it as a landmark deal that will improve the global conditions for trade and benefit developing countries in Africa and around the world by getting rid of trade distorting export subsidies in agriculture.

The 10th Ministereal Conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will be held in Nairobi from 15th to 18th December 2015. The event is expected to be attended by trade negotiators of the 161 WTO Members States including Dr.Ekwow Spio Garbrah, the Honourable Minister for Trade and Industry , and even delegates from non-member countries.
