Tanzania is determined to become a middle income economy by 2015, if we are to go by declarations, not only from politicians—who we normally take with a pinch of salt—but also from policymakers.

>Sports lovers live in hope against hope that the new community-based sports park in Dar es Salaam will help make Tanzania a force to reckon with.

>A society that values its future accords the highest priority to the meaningful participation of youth in its affairs. In politics, the participation of young people in the democratic process is the tonic for preparing them to take over leadership positions when their time comes.

After witnessing Tanzania’s performance at recent major sports competitions, including the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers, ITF/CAT East Africa Junior Championship and ITC Africa U-19 Championship, we can come to one solid conclusion: Our sports will flourish only with strong youth development programmes.

>For a long time, athletics has been our main source of medals in major international competitions. But in the past ten or so years, our country’s performance in track events has not been impressive.

Today is the official opening of the Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete Youth Park in Dar es Salaam.
