EDITORIAL: Smart move, Mr President!

>The initiative by International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) to enhance the capacity of the government to implement climate change policies meant to ensure Tanzania attains food security is most laudable.

Some of our institutions qualify as national icons because of their importance in our history. They have literally become the national heartbeat because of their role in shaping the direction of the country. For that reason, we have an obligation to cherish and safeguard them so they can continue to serve the nation.

News that the government has approved a payment plan for the loans it owes national social security funds is welcome. If anything, the deal should have been sealed two or three years ago. Much as we all agree that there is no way for social security funds to avoid doing business with the government in an economic setting like ours, a debt of Sh8.43 trillion is just too heavy for the former to shoulder.

>The Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) on Tuesday launched a film and a new song aimed at educating the public on the process of writing the new constitution. The centre will distribute the draft of the proposed constitution in all 20 regions. It will also distribute the film free of charge in all regions.

Servant of the people” is one of the most abused concepts in politics, thanks to dishonesty and opportunism. During electioneering seasons, many candidates aspiring to become members of national parliaments and the East African Legislative Assembly (eala) project themselves as a very humble lot.
