The United Nations Security Council warned on Thursday of a possible famine next year in South Sudan and an attendant risk of “regional instability.”

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir tells the BBC his country faces "one of worst famines ever" unless the current conflict is ended.

Thirty years ago the BBC broadcast the first television reports of a devastating famine in Ethiopia. Tesfatsion Dalellew saw the reports and coordinated World Vision's response.

Three years to the day since a famine that eventually killed more than a quarter of a million people was declared in Somalia, aid agencies warned today the country faced a new catastrophe without urgent aid.

World leaders meet in Ethiopia on Monday for a summit, which will lay the ground rules for a fairer world of inclusive, low-carbon growth.
