Somalia threatened with another famine

The infestation devouring tonnes of crops in the region could create a food crisis, the UN says.

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir tells the BBC his country faces "one of worst famines ever" unless the current conflict is ended.

At least 30,000 people in South Sudan are facing starvation and millions more are facing severe hunger because of the civil war, the UN says.

The United Nations Security Council warned on Thursday of a possible famine next year in South Sudan and an attendant risk of “regional instability.”

“If the conflict in South Sudan continues, and more aid cannot be delivered, then by August it is likely that some localised areas of South Sudan will slip into famine,” Britain’s Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) warned, a coalition of 13 major aid agencies.
