MY TAKE ON THIS: Politicians should give us a break on empty promises

Precisely two weeks from today, 23 million Tanzanians will vote to elect their Fifth Phase councillors, MPs and Union President. In the Isles, the Sunday, October 25 polls will also see citizens in that part of the United Republic elect Members of the House of Representatives and Zanzibar President.

Residents told The Citizen during Chadema campaing rally at Deko grounds that they have for many years been filled with too many promises during election time:

If we were to describe the African continent in brief, it would probably be “where there are trees but no builders.” It has plenty of human and natural resources, but the majority of its people languish in abject poverty.

Twaweza’s new survey indicates that Tanzanians are generally ill-informed on the gains from gas economy. Let’s take this as a wake-up call. It is interesting that Twaweza has released the report at a time when politicians are stomping around the country, telling the electorate they will upgrade Tanzania’s economy using revenue sourced from gas deals.

People power witnessed in 2014 and 2015, for example in changes of government in Burkina Faso and Nigeria, will be proved limited in 2016.
