Safety is a citizen’s right

Imagine taking a stroll through the busy streets of Dar and seeing a minister involved in a scuffle with city militias, probably for not complying with the law. Your  first instinct would probably be to capture the moment to post and share it on mainstream social media. But wait a minute; how safe will you be after posting it to the public? What if the minister starts a search for the person who has uploaded the embarrassing video on Facebook or Twitter or discussed it on Jamiiforums

The Citizen, Tanzania’s youngest English daily, turns ten today. A child born on the same day with this paper could as well be in Class 5 now and probably a great fan of The Citizen on Sunday’s educative and entertaining pull-out, ‘Young Citizen’.

Pan Africa Power Solutions Tanzania Limited (PAP) is suing both The Citizen and Mwananchi newspapers, demanding a whopping $5.5 billion as general damages and business losses the company claims it suffered following the series of articles published in March, this year.

The small boy (or, is it a girl?) has grown big, and now can run in the league of peers in and outside Tanzania.

Today, we celebrate the 1oth birthday of The Citizen newspaper—a decade of excellence in journalism in Tanzania and indeed, in East Africa.
